Feast Day of Saint Blaise

St. Blaise - Autom.comJoin Autom as we celebrate the Feast Day of St. Blaise today.

Saint Blaise devoted the earlier years of his life to the study of philosophy, and afterwards became a physician. In the practice of his profession he saw so much of the miseries of life and the hollowness of worldly pleasures that he resolved to spend the rest of his days in the service of God, and became a physician of souls. The Bishop of Sebaste, in Armenia, died, and Saint Blaise, much to the gratification of the inhabitants of that city, was appointed to succeed him. He then escaped the persecution of Diocletian by retiring to the hills and living as a hermit.

In the wilderness, wild animals would come to him for healing and gather around his cave. Blaise would walk among them unafraid. Saint Blaise at once began to instruct his people as much by his example as by his words, and the great virtues and sanctity of this servant of God were confirmed by many miracles. From all parts people came flocking to Blaise for the cure of bodily and spiritual ills.

Agricolaus, Governor of Cappadocia and the Lesser Armenia, having begun a persecution by order of the Emperor Licinius, seized Saint Blaise and hurried him off to prison. While on his way there, a distraught mother, whose only child was dying of a throat disease, threw herself at his feet and implored his intercession. Touched at her grief, the Saint offered up his prayers, and the child was cured; and since that time his aid has often been effectually solicited in cases of a similar disease.

Refusing to worship the false gods of the heathens, Saint Blaise was first scourged; his body was then torn with hooks, and finally he was beheaded in the year 316.

Saint Blaise; martyr for Jesus, healer of throat diseases and patron of veternarians, pray for us.

The Presentation of the Lord

Thursday, February 2, 2012 by Chris Vallely
Presentation of the Lord - Autom.comJoin Autom as we celebrate the feast of the Presentation of the Lord!

In accordance with Jewish law, 40 days after their birth, all first born males had to be presented in sacrifice to the Lord and actually bought back from Him with a substitute sacrifice. Mary and Joseph brought Jesus up to the temple in accordance with the Law and they were met by Simeon, who had been promised by the Holy Spirit that he would see the Messiah before his death. Old Simeon greeted them, blessing the baby Jesus and His parents.

This is especially significant and poignant in that Mary and Joseph went to offer Jesus, God’s only Son, back to Him in sacrifice. They “purchased” His freedom with a pair of doves, when He in turn would purchase our freedom by His death on the cross.

When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, they took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord,
just as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord,"
and to offer the sacrifice of "a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons," in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord.
Luke 2:22-24

The Fourth Joyful Mystery of the Rosary:
The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple

We pray this mystery of the Rosary for the Virtue of Obedience

When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, they took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. - Luke 2:22

Meditation

In obedience to the Law of Moses, Mary and Joseph presented Jesus to God in the temple. The long wait of Israel for the Messiah was ended. So too was the waiting of old Simeon, who blessed the child and His parents, having been promised by the Spirit that he should not die until he had seen the Lord’s Anointed One. He prayed, “Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation… .”
(Luke 2:29-30)

Anna, a faithful widow, had also prayed and fasted much for this day, and she rejoiced in it.

+++

As Orthodox Jews, Mary and Joseph obeyed the Law of God. Am I willing to obey God, to follow His Commandments in Scripture and in the teaching of the Church, even when it takes great courage?

+++

Dear Mother Mary, we place in your heart today all those in authority as well as those who obey them. We pray that God’s dreams for every child come true. We pray for the elderly and all those who invest their lives in others. Dear Lord Jesus, through Mary’s intercession, may we pray in faith, wait in hope, and obey in trust, that You will fulfill all Your promises to us and bring us Your salvation. Amen.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity Begins January 18th, 2012

Tuesday, January 17, 2012 by Chris Vallely
Pope Benedict XVI in Prayer  The Vatican announced today that the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is due to begin tomorrow, 18 January, under the theme "We will all be changed by the victory of our Lord Jesus Christ". The Week is promoted by the World Council of Churches (WCC), a worldwide fellowship of 349 Churches seeking unity, common witness and Christian service. The Catholic Church participates in this ecumenical initiative, despite not being a member of the WCC.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is traditionally celebrated from 18 to 15 January in the northern hemisphere, and around the time of Pentecost in the southern hemisphere. It brings together Christian parishes and congregations from different confessional families all over the world, who meet and pray together in special ecumenical celebrations.

praying hands - Autom.com  Each year ecumenical partners in a particular region are asked to prepare a basic text on a biblical theme. Then an international group with WCC-sponsored (Protestant and Orthodox) and Roman Catholic participants edits this text to ensure it is linked with the search for Christian unity. The text is jointly published by the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, and by the WCC's Commission on Faith and Order which also accompanies the entire production process of the text. The final material is sent to member Churches and Roman Catholic dioceses, which are invited to translate the text and contextualise it for their own use.

This year's theme comes from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians which promises the transformation of human life - with all its apparent dimensions of 'triumph' and 'defeat' - through the victory of Christ's resurrection.

Following the Angelus prayer on Sunday, Benedict XVI invited the faithful, "as individuals and in communities, to participate spiritually, and where possible practically in the Week of Prayer, to ask God for the gift of full unity among the disciples of Christ". Join Autom this as we participate in this year's Week of Prayer!

The Epiphany of the Lord

Friday, January 6, 2012 by Chris Vallely
Adoration of the Magi - Autom.com   The word Epiphany, from the Greek epiphaneia, means appearance or manifestation. In the New Testament the word refers either to the birth of Jesus, or to one of His manifestations, for example, after His Resurrection. The Epiphany, or Manifestation, of Jesus to the Gentiles, represented by the Wise Men, was a most significant event, for it signaled that Christ was sent for the salvation of all people. Isaiah had prophesied about the Messiah:

Caravans of camels shall fill you,
dromedaries from Midian and Ephah;
All from Sheba shall come
bearing gold and frankincense,
and proclaiming the praises of the LORD.

–Isaiah 60:6

At the time of Christ's birth there were Wise Men, called Magi, who traveled a long distance to come to Jerusalem. They went to the king, named Herod, and said to him, “Where is he who is born King of the Jews? We have seen his star in the sky, and have come to worship him.”

Adoration of the Magi Murillo - Autom.comHerod did not want to hear of any king but himself. He therefore called together the learned men in Jerusalem and asked them, “Where is the Messiah, called Christ, to be born?” They answered, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus wrote the prophet: ‘You, Bethlehem, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; since from you shall come a ruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel.’”

Herod then said to the Magi in secret, “Go to Bethlehem and find the child. When you have found him, let me know, that I too may go and worship him.” The Magi then set out, following the star until it stopped over the place where Jesus was.

The Magi entered the house and found Jesus with his mother Mary. They worshiped the child, and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. After this, they were warned in a dream not to return to Herod, and so they left by another way.

Epiphany Traditions:

In Louisiana, the Carnival season begins on January 6th, the traditional feast of the Epiphany, and lasts until the day before Ash Wednesday, which is the beginning of Lent. The “King Cake” is prepared to honor the Three Magi. The King Cake tradition is thought to have been brought to New Orleans from France in 1870. A King Cake is an oval shaped bakery delicacy that is rich in both flavor and history. A tiny plastic baby is included with each King Cake.

Like the Wise men searching for the Christ child, the person who finds the baby in his slice is playfully honored as the king of the party! In keeping with Christian kingship, he’s expected to serve his fellows by hosting the next feast. This is also a wonderful Hispanic tradition, known as the cake of the Tres Reyes.

How ever you chose to celebrate, we hope you have a blessed Epiphany from everyone at Autom!

Our Lady of the Rosary

Friday, October 7, 2011 by Chris Vallely
Our Lady of the RosaryToday join the Church and Autom as we celebrate the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.

In the 16th century, Vienna and the rest of the European nations were threatened by Muslim military power and incursions. Pope Saint Pius V tried to alert the great powers of Europe to the coming menace, calling on the Holy League, which consisted of the Spain, Genoa, Venice, the Papal States, and the Knights of Malta, to address the Muslim threat.

Don Juan of Austria, the son of the King of Spain, gathered a sturdy fleet. The Venetians were especially passionate about this battle, since they had suffered greatly at the hands of the Turks. The Christian fleet consisted of 300-ships, with 50,000 rowers and 30,000 fighters. Still, they were greatly outnumbered by the Turkish fleet. Pope Pius V called upon all Christendom to pray the Rosary.

Don Juan had a picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe, newly sent over from the Spanish colony of Mexico, on his vessel, and Andrea Doria, one of the Catholic admirals for the Genoans at Lepanto, carried on his ship a statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

The morning of the battle arrived on October 7th, 1571, with a strong wind blowing in favor of the Turkish fleets. Don Juan sailed in a small, speedy vessel to each of his ships, shouting encouragement and prayers to the men. Immediately, the winds shifted in favor of the Christians. The battle lasted 5 hours and Christians won a stunning victory at Lepanto, defeating the Turks and saving Europe from Muslim invasion and eventual domination.

In gratitude, Pope Pius V celebrated the Battle as "Our Lady of Victory." Later, the feast of October 7th was renamed "Our Lady of the Rosary" and extended throughout the Universal Church.

When you are facing battles of your own, do not go at it alone. Turn to Jesus and the Blessed Mother for strength and guidance when the opposition seems unbeatable or situation seems unbearable. Mary, mother of Jesus:Mary with her mother Anne

Many years ago, there lived in Israel an elderly couple named Joachim and Anne. They had no children, which made them very sad. They trusted in God and devoted themselves to prayer and good works. At the appointed time, God heard their prayers. Anne conceived in her womb a daughter, Mary. Through God’s amazing favor and grace, Mary was conceived without Original Sin.

Anne watched every movement of her little daughter Mary with reverent tenderness, and felt herself deeply blessed by the presence of her pure and lovely child. Anne and Joachim’s home was filled with peace and grace.

Mary was a beautiful little girl. She loved to help others. She fed the birds and she cared for the little creatures that played in her yard. As she grew older, Mary helped her mother to cook and bake. Sometimes Mary and her mother and father would walk outside together to enjoy the beautiful warm sun and the cool breezes blowing across the hills of Nazareth.

Mary played happily with her little friends. Everyone in Nazareth especially loved her bright eyes and her cheerful smile. People felt better around Mary, though they didn’t really know why. She brought joy wherever she went.

St. Anthony of Padua

Monday, June 13, 2011 by Chris Vallely

Happy feast day to St. Anthony of Padua! Visit Autom.com for a large selection of items devoted to St. Anthony. Choose from holy cards, medals, statues, and so much more.

Autom - St. Anthony of PaduaSaint Anthony was born on August 15, in the year 1195, in Lisbon, Portugal, to a wealthy family. His given name is Fernando Martins de Bulhão. His parents wanted Fernando to become a noble, but Fernando had other plans. He did not want to attend the local Catholic school, as his family desired, and chose instead to enter the Augustinian Abbey of Saint Vincent near Lisbon, Portugal. Fernando was a member of the Canons Regular of Saint Augustine, a group well known for their pursuit of education and all things scholarly. While attending the Augustinian Abbey, 15-year old Fernando studied the Holy Scriptures and Latin classics. However, because of the constant interruptions from friends and family who’d come to visit and bring him gifts that embarrassed him, Fernando’s schoolwork suffered, leaving him restless and without peace. To avoid this, he requested a transfer to the Abbey of the Holy Cross in Coimbra (the capital of Portugal at the time). Upon the approval of his superiors, Fernando transferred schools and continued his studies for the next nine years, away from suchbothers and interruptions.

In 1219, shortly after his ordination at the abbey, Fernando came in contact with five Franciscans who were on their way to preach to the Muslims in Morocco. As the head of hospitality at the abbey, Fernando found himself drawn to the simple, Gospel-focused lifestyle of the Franciscan friars. In February 1220, the five Franciscans were martyred by the Muslims in Morocco. When Fernando heard the news, he meditated on their heroism and found himself compelled by God to leave everything behind and follow the path God would lay before him. With the approval of his superiors, Fernando joined the Franciscan order and studied the ways and teachings of their founder, Saint Francis of Assisi. He changed his name from Fernando to Anthony after he joined the Order of Friars Minor because the Franciscan hermitage where he was living was dedicated to Saint Anthony. Accompanying another friar, he journeyed to Morocco, but soon became quite ill and was forced to return home to Portugal. On the way there, the ship he sailed in ran into fierce storms and was driven onto the coast of Sicily until it stopped finally at Messina. Anthony worked his way to Assisi and attempted to join a monastery in Italy, but his ill health and sick appearance caused him much difficulty. Out of compassion, the monks assigned him to the rural hospice of San Paolo (near Forlì, Romagna, Italy). For nine months, Anthony lived the life of a hermit where he served as a chaplain and worked in the kitchen.

Autom: St Anthony with ChildIn 1221, Saint Francis held a general chapter at Assisi and Anthony left the mountaintop where his hospice was located for an ordination in the town of Forli. Once there, a misunderstanding arose between the visiting Dominican monks and the Franciscans about who would do the preaching for that day. Everyone declined, at which point Anthony, the poor Portuguese friar, was asked by the head of the hermitage to speak whatever the Holy Spirit put into his mouth. Like the others, Anthony did not want to preach, but he was overruled and did as he was instructed. Though his speech was initially quite timid; though he faltered often, the sermon left a profound mark on the listeners; so much so that his amazed brethren rushed to tell Francis of Assisi of the impact Anthony’s rich voice, arresting manner and Gospel-inspired eloquence had had on them. In response, Francis of Assisi had Anthony moved from preaching the Gospel in the rural village to spreading the Gospel throughout the whole of Italy. It was at this time that Anthony became the first Franciscan in history to be appointed as lector in theology.

Anthony consistently attracted such large crowds during his preaching that no church in Italy could contain the crowd. Like Christ pushed back against a lake by large numbers of listeners, Anthony spoke outdoors in order to accommodate everyone. Such was the fervor of the crowd that a bodyguard was hired to protect Anthony from those who carried scissors in the hopes of cutting a piece of his habit to take home as a holy relic. Combined with Anthony’s understanding and knowledge of the Holy Scriptures was the binding of all his preaching upon all the words which he read there and meditated daily upon. One of his sermons had 187 references to Bible passages! He preached against usury (charging interest on a loan), a popular practice of the time, basing his words on the words he found in the Holy Scripture. Many preachers were prone to condemn heretics at that time, but rather than join the crowd, Anthony preached the Gospel of Christ and its saving message. Because of Anthony’s faithful and selfless sermons, many men and women were converted.

“The ones who preach correctly are those who conform by their actions to what they announce with their mouths,” said Anthony, who imitated our Lord Jesus Christ in his words, poverty, and actions. Anthony lived a life of grace-filled prayer and spent many a night in deep, soul-searching intimacy with the Almighty, irregardless of the states of weakness it left him in or the long day of preaching and teaching he’d conduct the following day.

St Anthony and Child - AutomIn 1227, Anthony was elected Provincial of the Franciscans of Northern Italy. The following year, a sermon he preached to Pope Gregory IX was said by many that heard it to resemble a second coming of Pentecost. In 1230, Anthony asked to be released from his Provincial duties so that he could devote himself in full to preaching. He always felt his calling to preaching to be more important than his call of teaching. A short distance from Venice, in the town of Padua (hence, “Saint Anthony of Padua”), Anthony took up his residence, where he continued his daily regimen of preaching and prayer, typically with even more vigor than in the past. The toll on his physical life would drain him of so much strength that he’d become gravely ill within only a few months. As a quickly approaching death became eminent, Anthony celebrated his last rites of the Sacrament. With a smile on his face, he gazed upward and said, “I see my Lord.”

On June 13, 1231, Anthony passed from this life to the next. “Our father, Saint Anthony, is dead," echoed the voices of children along the streets of Padua. The following year, while the church bells of Lisbon rang without ringers, Pope Gregory IX declared Anthony, “Saint Anthony.” June 13 – the day of Saint Anthony’s death – was thereby established as his feast day and a magnificent basilica was built at Padua in his honor. His body was moved there in 1263. In 1946, Pope Pius XII declared Saint Anthony of Padua a Doctor of the Church.

Today, Saint Anthony is known as a patron of the poor (alms given for his intercessions are known as “Saint Anthony’s Bread”) and a patron of lost articles. Tradition tells us this is based on this story: a novice of Anthony’s once ran away with a Commentary of the Psalms which had belonged to Anthony. When Anthony prayed that the Commentary and the novice would return, it happened. This is why the following phrase is recited when something is lost: “Saint Anthony, Saint Anthony, please come around. Something is lost and cannot be found.

Our Lady of Fatima

Friday, May 13, 2011 by Chris Vallely

Our Lady of Fatima

Our Lady of Fatima Holy CardToday, May 13th, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast of Our Lady of Fatima. Here is the story:

In a mountainous region near the town of Fatima, Portugal, the Mother of God appeared six times between May 13th and October 13th, 1917, to three shepherd children: Lucia Santos and her cousins, Jacinta and Francisco Marto. Mary told the children that she had been sent by God with a message for every man, woman, and child in our century. Coming at a time when civilization was torn asunder by war and violence, Mary promised that Heaven would grant peace to the entire world if her requests for prayer, reparation, and consecration were heard and obeyed.

Mary explained that war is a punishment for sin. She warned that if people continued to disobey God’s Will, they would suffer consequences of war, hunger, and persecution of the Church. She also prophesied that Russia would “spread her errors” of atheism and materialism across the earth. Our Lady of Fatima repeatedly emphasized the necessity of praying daily, especially the Rosary, of wearing the Brown Scapular, and of performing acts of reparation and sacrifice. She also promised a sign as proof of her messages.

Our Lady of Fatima StatueOn October 13, 1917, a crowd of 50,000 people at Fatima, including many noted skeptics, saw the sun rotating and spinning in the heavens; then, leaving its orbit, it plunged toward the earth. The “Miracle of the Sun” is fully documented. On May 13, 1981, Pope John Paul II was shot in the chest and in the abdomen at point blank range in St. Peter’s Square. He credited his miraculous escape from death to the intervention of Our Lady of Fatima. One year later he traveled to Fatima, and placed the bullet in the crown resting upon the statue of Mary. He said, “One finger fired the bullet, but another guided its path.”

Seven years later, the Berlin Wall fell without a bullet being fired, and Communism collapsed across the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.

Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us.

Saint Catherine of Siena

Friday, April 29, 2011 by Chris Vallely
SAINT CATHERINE OF SIENA

Feast Day: April 29
Patroness of Purity

St. Catherine of Siena, Doctor of the ChurchCatherine of Siena was born the daughter of humble Italian weavers in 1347. As a child, she loved to pray and even had visions of angels. Catherine made a vow to remain a virgin for Christ. At the age of 15, she entered the Third Order of Saint Dominic. Catherine remained in her father’s shop, where she served people with love and joy every day. At home, Catherine prayed much and enjoyed God’s presence and His love.

After some time, Our Lord told Catherine to travel through Italy and to bring His people back to obedience to the Pope. Through her love and teaching, God brought many people close to His Son Jesus and the Catholic faith. Through Catherine’s prayers and work, Pope Gregory XI returned from France to Rome, and she encouraged him to help bring peace to the people of Italy.

God gave Catherine many spiritual gifts. She worked miracles and guided many people through her words and deeds. Catherine died at the age of 33. On October 4, 1970, Pope Paul VI declared Saint Catherine of Siena to be a Doctor, or True Teacher, of the Church.

Stations of the Cross

Friday, April 22, 2011 by Chris Vallely
The Stations of the Cross
Based on the Way of the Cross by St Alphonsus Liguori

PREPARATORY PRAYER

My Lord Jesus Christ, You made this journey to die for me with unutterable love, and I have so many times unworthily abandoned You; but now I love You with my whole heart, and because I love You, I repent sincerely for ever having offended You. Pardon me, my God, and permit me to accompany You on this journey. You go to die for love of me; I wish also, my beloved Redeemer, to die for love of You. My Jesus, I will live and die always united to You.

At the beginning of each station:
V. We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
R. Because by Your holy Cross, You have redeemed the world.

First Station of the Cross1. JESUS IS CONDEMNED TO DEATH

Consider how Jesus, after having been scourged and crowned with thorns, was unjustly condemned by Pilate to die on the Cross.

Dear Jesus, it was not Pilate, but my sins that condemned You to die. I ask You, by the merits of this sorrowful journey, to assist my soul in its journey towards eternity. I love You, my beloved Jesus; I repent with my whole heart for having offended You. Never permit me to separate myself from You again. Grant that I may love You always; and then do with me as You will.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father
At the Cross her station keeping,
Stood the mournful Mother weeping,
Close to Jesus to the last.

Second Station fo the Cross2. JESUS ACCEPTS HIS CROSS

Consider how Jesus, in making this journey with the Cross on His shoulders, thought of us, and offered to His Father, for us, the death He was about to undergo.

My most beloved Jesus, I embrace all the tribulations You have destined for me until death. I implore You, by the pain You suffered in carrying Your Cross, to give me the necessary help to carry mine with perfect patience and resignation. I love You, Jesus my love; I repent of having offended You. Never permit me to separate myself from You again. Grant that I may love You always; and then do with me as You will.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father
Through her heart, His sorrow sharing, All His bitter anguish bearing,
Now at length the sword has passed!

Third Station of the Cross3. JESUS FALLS THE FIRST TIME

Consider this first fall of Jesus under His Cross. His flesh was torn by the scourges, His head crowned with thorns, and He had lost a great quantity of blood. He was so weakened that he could scarcely walk, and yet he had to carry this great load upon His shoulders. The soldiers struck Him rudely, and thus He fell several times in His journey.

My beloved Jesus, it is not the weight of the Cross, but my sins, which have made You suffer so much pain. By the merits of this first fall, deliver me from the misfortune of falling into mortal sin. I love You, O my Jesus, with my whole heart; I repent of having offended You. Never permit me to separate myself from You again. Grant that I may love You always; and then do with me as You will.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father
O, how sad, and sore distressed, Now was she, that Mother Blessed,
of the sole-begotten One.

Fourth Station of the Cross4. JESUS MEETS HIS SORROWFUL MOTHER

Consider the meeting of the Son and the Mother, which took place on this journey. Jesus and Mary looked at each other, and their looks became as so many arrows to wound those hearts which loved each other so tenderly.

My most loving Jesus, by the sorrow You experienced in this meeting, grant me the grace of a truly devoted love for Your most holy Mother. And you, my Queen, who were overwhelmed with sorrow, obtain for me by your intercession a continual and tender remembrance of the Passion of your Son. I love You, Jesus my love; I repent of ever having offended You. Never permit me to offend You again. Grant that I may love You always; and then do with me as You will.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father
Woebegone, with heart’s prostration, Mother meek, the bitter Passion,
Saw she of her glorious Son.

5. SIMON HELPS JESUS TO CARRY THE CROSS
Fifth Station of the Cross
Consider how the soldiers, seeing that at each step Jesus, from weakness, was on the point of expiring, and fearing that He would die on the way, forced Simon the Cyrenian to carry the Cross behind our Lord.

Dear Jesus, I will not refuse the Cross, as the Cyrenian did; I accept it; I embrace it. I accept in particular the death You have destined for me; with all the pains that may accompany it; I unite it to Your death, I offer it to You. You have died for love of me; I will die for love of You, and to please You. Help me by Your grace. I love You, Jesus my love; I repent of having offended You. Never permit me to offend You again. Grant that I may love You always; and then do with me as You will.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father
Who could mark, from tears refraining, Christ’s dear Mother uncomplaining,
In so great a sorrow bowed?

Sixth Station of the Cross6. VERONICA WIPES THE FACE OF JESUS

Consider how the holy woman Veronica, seeing Jesus so afflicted, and His face bathed in sweat and blood, presented Him with a towel, with which He wiped His adorable face, leaving on it the impression of His holy countenance.

My most beloved Jesus, Your face was beautiful before, but in this journey it has lost all its beauty, and wounds and blood have disfigured it. Regrettably, my soul also was once beautiful, when it received Your grace in Baptism; but I have disfigured it since by my sins; You alone, my Redeemer, can restore it to its former beauty. Do this by Your Passion, O Jesus. I repent of having offended You. Never permit me to offend You again. Grant that I may love You always; and then do with me as You will.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father
Who, unmoved, behold her languish, Underneath His cross of anguish,
‘Mid the fierce, unpitying crowd
?

7. JESUS FALLS THE SECOND TIME
Seventh Station of the Cross
Consider the second fall of Jesus under the Cross — a fall which renews the pain of all the wounds of the head and members of our afflicted Lord.

My most gentle Jesus, how many times You have pardoned me, and how many times have I fallen again, and begun again to offend You! By the merits of this new fall, give me the necessary help to persevere in Your grace until death. Grant that in all temptations which beset me I may always commend myself to You. I love You, Jesus my love; I repent of having offended You. Never permit me to offend You again. Grant that I may love You always; and then do with me as You will.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father
For His people’s sins rejected, She her Jesus, unprotected,
Saw with thorns, with scourges rent.

Eighth Station of the Cross8. THE WOMEN OF JERUSALEM WEEP OVER JESUS

Consider how those women wept with compassion at seeing Jesus in such a pitiable state, streaming with blood, as He walked along. But Jesus said to them: “Weep not for Me, but for your children.”

My Jesus, laden with sorrows, I weep for the offenses I have committed against You, because of the pains they have deserved, and still more because of the displeasure they have caused You, who have loved me so much. It is Your love, more than the fear of hell, which causes me to weep for my sins. My Jesus, I love You more than myself; I repent of having offended You. Never permit me to offend You gain. Grant that I may love You always; and then do with me as You will.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father
Saw her Son from judgement taken, Her beloved in death forsaken,
Till His Spirit forth He sent.

9. JESUS FALLS THE THIRD TIME
Ninth Station of the Cross
Consider the third fall of Jesus Christ. His weakness was extreme, and the cruelty of His executioners was excessive, as they tried to hasten His steps when He had scarcely strength to move.

Oh my outraged Jesus, by the merits of the weakness You suffered in going to Calvary, give me strength sufficient to conquer all human respect, and all my wicked passions, which have led me to despise Your friendship. I love You, Jesus my love, with my whole heart; I repent of having offended You. Never permit me to offend You again. Grant that I may love You always; and then do with me as You will.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father
Fount of love and holy sorrow, Mother, may my spirit borrow
Somewhat of your woe profound.

Tenth Station of the Cross10. JESUS IS STRIPPED OF HIS GARMENTS

Consider the violence with which the executioners stripped Jesus. His inner garments adhered to His torn flesh, and they dragged them off so roughly that the skin came with them. Comfort your Savior thus cruelly treated, and say to Him:

My innocent Jesus, by the merits of the torments You endured, help me to strip myself of all affection to things of earth, in order that I may place all my love in You, who are so worthy of my love. I love You, O Jesus, with my whole heart; I repent of having offended You. Never permit me to offend You again. Grant that I may love You always; and then do with me as You will.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father
Unto Christ, with pure emotion, Raise my contrite heart devotion,
Love to read in every wound.

11. JESUS IS NAILED TO THE CROSS
Eleventh Station of the Cross
Consider how Jesus, after being thrown on the Cross, stretched out His arms, and offered to His eternal Father the sacrifice of His death for our salvation. The executioners nailed His hands and feet, and then, raising the Cross, left Him to die in anguish.

My crucified Jesus, nail my heart to Your Cross, that it may ever remain there, to love You, and never leave You again. I love You more than myself; I repent of having offended You. Never permit me to offend You again. Grant that I may love You always; and then do with me as You will.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father
Those five wounds on Jesus smitten, Mother! in my heart be written,
Deep as in your own they be.

Twelfth12. JESUS DIES UPON THE CROSS

Consider how your Jesus, after three hours’ Agony on the Cross, consumed at length with anguish, abandons Himself to the weight of His body, bows His head, and dies.

O my dying Jesus, I kiss devoutly the Cross on which You died for love of me. I deserve because of my sins, to die; but Your death is my hope. By the merits of Your death, give me grace to die, embracing Your feet, and burning with love for You. I yield my soul into Your hands. I love You with my whole heart; I repent of ever having offended You. Never permit me to offend You again. Grant that I may love You always; and then do with me as You will.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father
You, my Savior’s Cross who bear, And your Son’s rebuke who share,
Let me share them both with you.

13. JESUS IS TAKEN DOWN FROM THE CROSS
Thirteenth Station of the Cross
Consider how, after the death of our Lord, two of His disciples, Joseph and Nicodemus, took Him down from the Cross, and placed Him in the arms of His afflicted Mother, who received Him with unutterable tenderness, and pressed Him to her bosom.

O Mother of Sorrows, for the love of this Son, accept me for your servant, and pray to Him for me. And You, my Redeemer, since You have died for me, permit me to love You; for I desire only You, and nothing more. I love You, my Jesus, and I repent of ever having offended You. Never let me offend You again. Grant that I may love You always; and then do with me as You will.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father
In the Passion of my Maker, Be my sinful soul partaker,
Weep till death, and keep with you.

Fourteenth Station of the Cross14. JESUS IS PLACED IN THE TOMB

Consider how the disciples carried the body of Jesus to bury it, accompanied by His holy Mother, who arranged it in the sepulcher with her own hands. They then closed the tomb, and all withdrew.

Oh, my buried Jesus, I kiss the stone that encloses You. But You did rise again the third day. I beseech You, by Your resurrection, make me rise glorious with You at the last day, to be always united with You in heaven, to praise You and love You forever. I love You, and I repent of ever having offended You. Never permit me to offend You again. Grant that I may love You always; and then do with me as You will.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father
Christ, when You shall call me hence; Be Your Mother my defense;
Be Your Cross my Victory!

Fifteenth Station of the Cross15. JESUS RISES FROM THE DEAD!

Consider how, very early on the first day of the week, several women bringing ointment and spices went to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body. When they arrived they found that the stone had been rolled away! Amazed, they entered the empty tomb and saw an angel clothed in white who said to them, “Do not fear! Jesus is not here; he is risen! Behold the place where they laid him.”

O Jesus, in the shimmering rays of this morning, a new light dawns on Mary’s pierced heart as You resurrect from the dead. Somewhere in the night, You stepped out of the empty grave with the fire of victory in Your Heart and an unconquerable joy in Your Soul as You definitively triumphed over sin and death. Jesus, thank You for living and dying for us, so that we who believe in and follow You will not die, but live in heaven forever with You.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father
While my body here decays, May my soul Your goodness praise,
Safe in Paradise with You. Amen.

Easter Prayer 2011

Friday, April 22, 2011 by Chris Vallely
Happy Easter From Autom
Christ is Risen
Dear Heavenly Father,

As Easter Sunday approaches, let us take time to remember the events that took place leading up to this day so many years ago. We must not forget the anguish and pain that Jesus openly endured and welcomed, so that we may all be saved from a lifetime of suffering. Then three days later he rose from the dead, just as it was promised. His self-less act allows us to live knowing that we have received His promise of eternal life.

Dear Lord, this Easter please help us fully believe without any doubt. In the glorious Alleluias ringing out across the land, fill us with Your joy, O Risen Lord! Fill us with the certain hope that Jesus has overcome all evil, all sorrow, and all death. Help us to know beyond the shadow of a doubt that we too are risen with Jesus this Easter morning. Let us bring the light and joy of our Risen Savior to the whole world!

Lord Jesus, You are the hero of this story. You are the Lamb who laid down his life for us. You alone are our Victorious Redeemer!

Alleluia! He is risen as He said!

If we have died with him,
then we shall also live with him.
2 Timothy 2:11

On behalf of our Autom family we wish you a Blessed Easter!

The Beatification of Pope John Paul II on Divine Mercy Sunday

Thursday, April 21, 2011 by Chris Vallely
Pope John Paull II BeatificationOn Sunday, May 1st, 2011, join Autom as we will celebrate God’s amazing love as revealed this past century in two unexpected ways: the Divine Mercy devotion and the gift of Blessed John Paul II.

Pope John Paul (Karol Wojtyla) was born in Wadowice, Poland, and later moved to Krakow. Five years after his birth, Helena Kowalska, a fellow Pole, was accepted into religious life, where she took the name Sister Mary Faustina.

During the next decade, Our Lord Jesus revealed to Sister Faustina that He greatly desired her to promote devotion to His Divine Mercy throughout the world. This devotion included an image depicting His appearance, which she had painted. The Divine Mercy image is both an instrument through which God gives His graces, as well as a reminder that Jesus summons us to do acts of mercy, through our deeds, words, and prayers.

Pope John Paull II Divine MercyJesus also gave Sister Faustina the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. He promised that those who venerated the image would greatly advance in holiness and gain victory in this life over the enemies of our souls. He further promised a happy and holy death with the assurance of His personal defense at its hour. Jesus avowed, “I wish to grant unimaginable graces to those who trust in My Mercy.”

As a Cardinal, Karol Wojtyla had believed in the Divine Mercy Devotion, and as Pope he authorized the publication of Sister Faustina’s diaries and promotion of the devotion. On April 30, 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized Sister Maria Faustina Kowalska, surprising the entire world by establishing Divine Mercy Sunday as a feast day for the entire Church. He declared, “This is the happiest day of my life.” In 2002, Pope John Paul entrusted the whole world to God’s Mercy when he consecrated the International Shrine of the Divine Mercy in Lagniewniki, Poland— burial site of Saint Faustina.

Pope John Paul II himself died April 2, 2005, the Vigil of Divine Mercy Sunday. Many believe that his greatest mission was to place the indescribable Mercy of God in hands of needy sinners like us. This year, on May 1st, the feast of Divine Mercy, Pope Benedict XVI will beatify Pope John Paul II, as another sign of God’s abundant mercy on His beloved children.

Program for the Beatification of John Paul II

Tuesday, April 5, 2011 by Chris Vallely
Pope John Paul IIVATICAN CITY, 5 APR 2011 (VIS) - This morning, a conference was held at the Holy See Press Office to present the preparations and the program for the beatification of John Paul II. The speakers were Cardinal Agostino Vallini, vicar general for the diocese of Rome; Fr. Federico Lombardi S.J., director of Vatican Radio, the Vatican Television Centre (CTV) and the Holy See Press Office; Fr. Cesare Atuire, director general of Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi; Msgr. Marco Frisina, director of the Office of Liturgical Celebrations of the Vicariate of Rome; and Fr. Walter Insero, director of the Office of Social Communications of the Vicariate of Rome.

Cardinal Vallini presented the full program for the celebrations for the beatification, which he described as "strongly characterised by particular elements intended to emphasise the richness of John Paul II's personality, and the impact of his pontificate on the life of the diocese of Rome and on the whole world".

1. The Vigil, 30 April (Circus Maximus, 20.00 to 22.30).

The celebration will be divided into two parts. The first part will be dedicated to remembering the words and actions of John Paul II. There shall then be a solemn procession during which the image of Maria Salus Populi Romani will be enthroned; this shall be accompanied by representatives of all the parishes and chaplaincies of the diocese. Privileged accounts will be given by Joaquin Navarro-Valls and Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, both of whom worked closely with the Pope, and by Sr. Marie Simon-Pierre, whose miraculous recovery opened the way for the beatification process. This first part of the celebrations will be concluded with the hymn "Totus tuus", composed for the 50th anniversary of John Paul's priestly ordination.

The second part will focus on the celebration of the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary, which were introduced by John Paul II. After the hymn "Open the doors to Christ", Cardinal Vallini will give an introduction summarising the spiritual and pastoral character of John Paul II. The Rosary will then be recited, with a live connection to five Marian sanctuaries around the world. Each of the five Mysteries of the Rosary shall be linked to a prayer intention of importance to John Paul II. In the Sanctuary of Lagniewniki, Krakow, the prayer intention will take the theme of youth; in the Sanctuary of Kawekamo, Bugando, Tanzania, the family; in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lebanon, Harissa, evangelisation; in the Basilica of Sancta Maria de Guadalupe, Mexico City, hope and peace among peoples; and in the Sanctuary of Fatima, the Church.

To conclude the vigil, Benedict XVI shall recite the final oration and impart the apostolic blessing to all participants, in live transmission from the Apostolic Palace.

That night the following churches shall remain open for the oration: Sant' Agnese in Agone, Piazza Navona; San Marco al Campidoglio; Santa Anastasia; Santissimo Nome di Gesù all'Argentina; Santa Maria in Vallicella; San Giovanni dei Fiorentini; San Andrea della Valle; and San Bartolomeo all'Isola.

2. Mass of Beatification, 1 May, Sunday after Easter or of Divine Mercy (St. Peter's Square, 09.00: hour of preparation; 10.00: officiated by the Holy Father).

The solemn liturgy of beatification shall be preceded by an hour of preparation during which the faithful shall pray together the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, a devotion introduced by Saint Mary Faustina Kowalska and dear to the Blessed John Paul II. The preparation will conclude with an Invocation to Mercy in the world, with the hymn "Jezu ufam tobie". This will be followed by Mass, with the texts for the Sunday after Easter. At the end of the rite of beatification, the unveiling of the tapestry depicting the newly Blessed shall be accompanied by the Hymn to the Blessed in Latin.

3. Mass of thanksgiving, Monday 2 May (officiated by Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone, St. Peter's Square, 10.30).

Mass on Monday 2 May shall be the first celebrated in honour of the newly Blessed John Paul II. The texts shall be those of the Mass of the Blessed John Paul II. Music during the celebrations shall be provided by the Choir of the Diocese of Rome, with the participation of the Choir of Warsaw and the Wadowice Symphony Orchestra, Poland.

Fr. Lombardi explained that in the evening of Friday 29 April the tomb of the Blessed Pope Innocent XI - currently in the Chapel of St. Sebastian in St. Peter's Basilica - shall be transferred to the Altar of Transfiguration, to make way for the body of John Paul II. That morning, the coffin of John Paul II - which shall not be opened - will be transferred before the tomb of St. Peter, in the Vatican grotto. On the morning of 1 May, it will be brought before the Altar of Confession in the Basilica.

Following the beatification ceremony, the Pope and the concelebrating cardinals will make their way to the Altar of Confession in the Basilica and will pray for a moment before the body of the newly Blessed. From that evening, those who wish to do so may venerate the remains of John Paul II.

Fr. Walter Insero shall present the new project, "Digital Sentinels", recalling the polish Pope's address to the young as "sentinels of the morning" on World Youth Day 2000 in Rome.

Through the already well-known portal "Pope2You", provided by the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, it will be possible to send digital postcards with phrases, in several languages, extracted from John Paul II's various addresses to young people. These postcards may be used as invitations to young people to come to Rome to celebrate the beatification of John Paul II. Furthermore, through this portal it will be possible to follow the scheduled celebrations (Vigil, beatification Mass, Mass of thanksgiving).

This initiative, carried out in collaboration with Vatican Radio, the Vatican Television Center and the Office for Social Communications of the Vicariate of Rome, is managed by a group of young volunteers, several seminarians from colleges in Rome who provide translations in various languages, and friends from other continents.

Pray for Japan

Prayer for the People of Japan

Dear Heavenly Father, we praise and thank You today for who You are: Our eternal God who never faints nor grows weary. We lift up to You today the people of Japan in their hour of suffering as they seek to survive and recover from the triple assaults of earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear crisis.

In the name of Jesus, we ask You to pour out Your divine Mercy on everyone affected by this tragedy. We stand against the power of the enemy and plead the precious blood of Your Son Jesus over everyone afflicted. Bless and strengthen all those working feverishly to locate survivors and bring food, clothing, and shelter to those left devastated by this tragedy.

Help us also, dear God, respond both in faith and action, according to your Word:
“Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40). Dear Mother Mary, Our Lady of Akita, please pray for us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
